Worship Series:  Rend Your Hearts

This Lent might be a little harder as we speak to the need for self-denial and fasting, alongside repentance, confession, and assessing the conditions of our heart and souls.  However, each year we are gifted with this season to prepare to embrace the Resurrected One and claim once again the life that Christ promises us; to embrace the joy of the life of faith --- even in pandemic times.  It does not have to be a somber time but must be intentional.  Therefore, our journey this year will invite us to “rend our hearts” to God; “laying aside very weight and the sin that clings so closely” (Joel 2:13, Hebrews 12:1) so that our hearts might be more fully open and longing for all God has in store for us.  We’ll seek to turn ourselves more to God through worship, spiritual practices, devotion, study, and your individual spiritual disciplines.

"Finding Peace in an Anxious World"
Every Thursday in March at 6:30 pm via Zoom

Laura Whitefleet-Smith will lead this 4-week spiritual growth study which uses the book of Proverbs and “The Serenity Prayer” as a guide to help Christians find their way through anxiety, worry, and fear and move towards God’s peace that surpasses all understanding. Using “The Serenity Prayer” as a scaffold, Finding Peace in an Anxious World explores ways to discover peace through scriptural and spiritual disciplines so that we can be rooted in God and energized to live fully as disciples of Christ.  Sign up HERE.

Be the Change: Resources and UMM Event
As part of the UMC initiative to end racism, we began last summer to periodically offer resources for those seeking to Be The Change to dismantle systematic racism.  You can continue to find previously shared resources by clicking the Learn More button, below.

In honor of Black History Month, you are invited to watch the PBS Series - The Black Church: This is our Story, This is Our Song.

And listen to local voices in The Black Church episode from Another View Radio Show.

The VAUMC United Methodist Men are hosting the following event:
Dismantling Racism on March 16 (Zoom information below)
According to Andrew Kissell, Southeastern Jurisdictional president of United Methodist Men (UMM) and a lay member of the Virginia Conference, “United Methodist bishops are still working hard to learn, lead and love in this regard and will not back down from confronting this virulent strain of exclusion we call racism or white supremacy.” Kissell encourages the UMM to help "by boldly promoting dialogue on race; by becoming allies for change; and by recognizing that as lifelong learners we may be of much greater help when we actively listen to the victims’ stories of hate and exclusion.”
Join the Virginia Conference UMM for a Zoom forum on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. that will be moderated by Kissell. Learn more about the event at this link.
These resources are to encourage us all as we seek to love, listen, learn, self-reflect, and pray.
